In the year 1974, Jim Famias and a group of private individuals formed the Bismarck Midget Football Association. In the inaugural year, the Association provided supervised contact football for 100 boys, ages 9-12 on four different teams. The following year, they expanded to six teams and 150 boys. In the early 80's, Duane Holly volunteered to fulfill the lead role of operating the league and remained in that role until 2005. Under Duane's leadership, the league was restructured as the Bismarck Midget Football League (BMFL).
Through the years, youth football gained much attention and interest from the community, even at a younger age. In 2005, the Youth Football League (YFL) was established and offered tackle football to over 250 kids in 3rd and 4th grade. Although the YFL wasn't under the BMFL umbrella, momentum was building for the desire of youth participation in the great game of football.
In 2005 the BMFL expanded to seven teams, the first expansion since 1975. Interest and demand continued for youth football participation which led to rapid growth and multiple expansions the following years, doubling the number of teams and children participating.
While sustaining a great youth program for 5th and 6th graders, in 2017 the BMFL absorbed the YFL (3rd and 4th grade) and established what we know today as the Bismarck Youth Football League.
Today, the Bismarck Youth Football League (BYFL) provides youth football and cheerleading activities to over 600 boys and girls, ages 8-12 across 28 different teams in two divisions, Schumacher Division (3rd-4th grade) and Holly Division (5th-6th grade).
While we are proud of our history, we are excited about the forthcoming opportunities while we live through the evolution of football, especially youth football. We are thankful for Jim Famias and the private group who established youth football in the city of Bismarck. We are grateful for all the volunteers and the countless hours they have provided to make this league what it is today. We thank the sponsors throughout the years who have recognized the value of supporting youth sports participation and the life lessons that can be learned through the great game of football. Our hope is we continue to unite the bonds of friendship between the youth, parents, coaches, voluntneers, community and sponsors through our great program.
For all past, present, and future participants, THANK YOU!
